Тhree centuries of British music» were sounded on 7 October at «Маster Кlass»
8 October 2009On 7th October the Concert Hall of “Master Klass” assembled the music lovers and admirers of the British culture. The concert “Three Centuries of British Music” devoted to the 350th anniversary of the composer and founder of the British School of Composition, Henry Purcell, was successfully performed at “Master Klass”.
This event was initiated by the British musician and conductor Paul Henry. He brought to Kyiv the scores of several compositions by his well-known compatriots: Henry Purcell personally (1659 – 1695), along with William Boyce (1710 - 1779), Peter Warlock (1894 - 1930), Edward Elgar (1857 – 1934) and Michael Trippett (1905 - 1998). These compositions reflect the national composer school development for three centuries. A range of compositions sounded for the very first time in Ukraine! Paul has also assembled in the Ukrainian capital a team of young musicians: now this new chamber orchestra is known as “Collegium Kyiv”.
Upon the conductor`s words, the programme designed by himself, was to show the great influence and inspiration of Purcell, the so-called British “Orpheus”, upon all British composers. And his influence remains strong to this day.

The concert was of an extraordinary interest among people – there was a lack of seats in the hall! Also, among the spectators was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Great Britain to Ukraine, Mr. Lee Turner.
The concert was not just a musical event, but signified an educational function. Paul Henry preceded every concert part with a story about creativity of the composer whose works were to be performed, and the curious facts of his biography.

The audience warmly received the concert programme and the conductor`s work, as well as the whole team of musicians. Three times they were called for an "encore"! In order to perform the last composition Paul Henry along with the orchestra invited the audience to participate, having shown in what places to clap the rhythm.
It was the first concert held in this musical season at the Culture and Education Centre "Master Klass". We will inform you about our new projects in the near future.
