Sex Mob – a group of extraordinary jazz experimentalists from the USA – will give a concert on 12th March in Kyiv. The event is being supported by Jazz in Kiev, Oxford Klass and KVAZ.Art
15 March 2010
This quartet, which is led by one of the outstanding performers of the New-York experimental stage, Steven Bernstein (slide trumpet) will perform its Sexotica programme in Kyiv. The concert will take place within the framework of the group’s European tour, which now has an additional artist. Together with the regular band members (apart from Bernstein, there are Briggan Krauss on the saxophone, Tony Scherr on bass guitar, and Kenny Wollesen on drums), DJ Olive (laptop, turntable system) will also join the tour.
Sexotica (2006) is the basis of the tour programme and the latest studio CD of Sex Mob. The record was nominated for a Grammy for the Best Contemporary Jazz Album. It is music written in the style of the famous American pianist and composer Martin Denny (1911-2005), who was the father of the exotica style (incredibly popular and fantastic music in the 1960s based on the semi-ethnical melodies of the tropics). All New York musicians managed to combine modern electro music with acoustic experimental jazz. And, they kept to the main rule formed in the beginning, which was to entertain the audience.

Compositions from the early albums of Sex Mob will also be played at the concert (the band discography contains 7 CDs which were released between 1998 and 2009), including some of the famous “crazy” arrangements of the hits of Los del Rio (Macarena), Kurt Cobain (About a Girl), Paul McCartney (Live and Let Die), Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (Ruby Tuesday), as well as soundtracks to James Bond films and the jazz standards of Duke Ellington.
The concert will take place on 12th March at 8.00 p.m. in the Big Hall of the Music Conservatory (the National Music Academy of Ukraine n.a. P. I. Tchaikovsky).
Aleksey Kogan will lead the concert.
